Case Studies- Francible participates in translation of architecture-industry reference work
Swiss science and architecture publishing house Birkhäuser Verlag turned to Francible member Hélène Cheminal (assisted by Emmanuelle Daburger-Riffault) to translate from German to French around one-third of architect and professor Andrea Deplazes' industry-leading reference work Constructing Architecture: Materials, Processes, Structures. A Handbook. Translators Léo Biétry and Yves Rosset rounded out the team. The 560-page book was written for academics and architects. The German and English editions (2005) have already carved out a slot among the top architectural reference works. The book examines all aspects of construction, from materials to methods to real-life projects. The French version includes a study of transparent materials and the use of glass in construction. The standards for this translation project were thus high. Francible provided proven knowledge of the different aspects of construction (from wood and concrete to steel and glass) and architecture as well as the capacity to conduct thorough research and consistently and accurately select appropriate terminology. As the work will be published for a highly educated and demanding readership, the project also required excellent writing and editorial skills — all within extremely tight deadlines. Thomas de Kayser edited the work of all of the translators on the project in order to ensure consistency. |
